Mindfulness Meditation Helps Hot Flashes

A new study found that mindfulness mediation dramatically improved the quality of life for women who experienced severe hot flashes. In the study, researchers had women who experienced at least five or more hot flashes a day take a weekly 2.5 hour mindfulness class focused on body awareness, meditation, and stretching. The women also had CDs to help guide them through the program, which lasted eight weeks.

So what were the results?

Reuters Health reports:

By the time they finished the mindfulness program, the women were less stressed and anxious and were no longer considered out of the normal range for those symptoms. They also slept better, rated their quality of life higher, and were less bothered by their hot flashes -- an improvement that was still clear three months after women had completed the classes. At that point, the women were between "slightly" to "moderately" bothered by their hot flashes.

Pretty awesome, right?
