How To Find The Best Workout Apparel For Your Body Type

Written by Lorna Jane Clarkson

The best style appears effortless, authentic and natural. If you look at some of the most stylish women in the world, you’ll find they're surprisingly consistent in what they wear every day. They have a go-to “signature look” that best describes them; an indication they’ve found something they feel confident in and have built a wardrobe around that style.

This signature look can also translate into your everyday activewear. The key is to learn what works for you, what doesn’t and how to incorporate each season’s trends, styles and shapes without compromising your personal style or comfort.

Here, I’ve outlined the best styles and options for four different body types. Happy shopping and sweating!

1. Athletic

The epitome of fit, athletic bodies are lean, slender and tend to be straight up and down with few curves. Look for feminine fit fashion that allows you to flaunt your toned physique! And remember: the best curve you can have is a smile.

What to Look For:

Pants: Embrace bright colors and bold prints! This helps draw attention to different parts of your body to ensure your top and bottom halves stand on their own.

Tops: Separates work well to split your body and introduce a new silhouette. Have fun with blousy, loose-fitting tops to balance tight bottoms, or try an empire-cut with a built-in in sports bra.

Sports bras: Sports bras with built in cups provide the support you want while also giving your breasts a fuller, more feminine look than the dreaded sports bra "uniboob."

2. Fill-figured

The full-figured body shape is all woman — sexy, feminine and soft with evenly distributed weight. Finding pieces that minimize your midsection and highlight your shoulders and legs will have you feeling feminine and fearless.

What to Look For:

Pants: You’re going to love tights or bottoms that have a fold over or wide waistband. These will give you control over the rise of the pants and where they hit your stomach. If regular tights are too constricting, look for wide leg or flared options. Also, going with darker colors or smaller patterns tend to be most flattering.

Top: Choose tops that are fitted around the chest and then flair out at the waist, or, if pairing with tight pants, try looser fitting tops over a sports bra to accentuate your shape.

Sports bras: Opt for sports bras with thicker straps to ensure you’re supported during your workouts. Also, look for a clasp back with adjustable straps for customizable support.

3. Petite

They say good things come in small packages and petite frames are no different. If you're short in size or stature, your style can make a BIG impact. Be mindful, though: your frame can be swamped with too much fabric and print, so stick with form fitting cuts to show ‘em what you’ve got!

What to Look For:

Pants: 7/8 or full-length tights are best to elongate your legs; anything too short or cut in the middle of your leg will make you appear shorter than you are. Make sure to choose tights as opposed to roomier pants that add extra material. If you want to wear printed tights, it's best to go for a smaller print or block colors.

Top: Keep the styles structured and tailored. Choose small prints, fitted workout tops and styles with piping details. Stay away from stripes and anything too loose that you'll swim in.

Sports bras: Thin straps and padded sports bras will be your best friend. The padding gives you a little extra shape and the thin straps are easy to pair with different tops to create a trendy look.

4. Hourglass

With a well-defined waist and killer curves, the woman with an hourglass shape can rock some knock-out pieces that flatter her feminine frame. It’s all about styles that accentuate your naturally curvy shape.

What to Look For:

Pants: Tights are perfect to accentuate your tiny waist and shapely legs while creating a streamlined look. Choose styles that have fun prints and colors, as well as wide waistbands.

Top: Tops with banding or nipping at the waist will highlight your slim waist. Tight fitting tops are also a great option as they hug your curvy shape in all the right places

Sports bras: Thicker straps are essential to make sure your chest is fully supported when working out. To spice it up a bit, choose bras that have fun patterns and different styles and shapes in the back of the bra.

Above and beyond these styling tips, remember that confidence and positivity are the best tips for looking and feeling amazing! When it comes to workout gear, wear what makes you feel comfortable and like you can kick some serious butt!
