Avocados Could Hold The Key To Curing Leukemia
It turns out that avocados might be even more powerful than we thought, which is saying a lot considering how beneficial to health we know them to be.
According to a study published in the journal Cancer Research, avocados may hold the answer to curing leukemia (AML), a devastating cancer of the blood cells.
Professor Paul Spagnuolo from the University of Waterloo has discovered a lipid in avocados that attacks leukemia stem cells directly, without harming healthy cells.
"The stem cell is really the cell that drives the disease," he explained in a press release. "The stem cell is largely responsible for the disease developing and it's the reason why so many patients with leukemia relapse."
Spagnuolo believes that his avocado-based drug could dramatically increase life expectancy and quality of life for AML patients. But, of course, it's going to take time. The drug is still years away from becoming approved for use in cancer patients.
But he's already preparing for a Phase I clinical trial in which people diagnosed with AML could have access to it, which is encouraging. And we're all for avocados helping people in any way possible!
