Boost Your Gut Health With These 2 Smoothies

Trust your gut. When it comes to your health, this old adage rings true as doctors and dieticians try to understand the advantages of probiotics. These "good bacteria" that reside in your gastrointestinal tract may impact everything from our immune system to our cholesterol to our mental health.

Here are two simple recipes to help boost your gut health today!

Mango Green Tea Smoothie

The fresh flavors of mango and yogurt combine with a green tea base in this protein-rich smoothie. When choosing a protein powder, look for something high-quality.

Makes 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen cubed mango
  • 1 cup chilled brewed green tea
  • 1/2 cup low-fat or nonfat plain yogurt or homemade yogurt
  • 1 scoop (about 2 tablespoons) vanilla protein powder
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey (optional)

Preparation

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Divide among 2 glasses and serve, or store in the refrigerator for up to 3 or 4 days.

Pineapple Chia Colada Kefir

Pineapples are naturally occurring sources of bromelain, an enzyme that helps break down protein. The pineapple also adds vitamin C to this kefir.

Makes 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cubed fresh pineapple
  • 1/2 cup light coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup traditional plain kefir
  • 2 teaspoons chia seeds

Preparation

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Divide among 2 glasses and serve, or store in the refrigerator for up to 3 or 4 days.
