According to this year's American Fitness Index, Washington, D.C. is the fittest city in the country, holding onto its title for a second year in a row. And, as expected, California dominates the list.

On the bottom of the 50 largest metropolitan areas is Indianapolis.

Researchers from the American College of Sports Medicine based their rankings on outdoor exercise options, and rates of smoking, obesity and diabetes.

For the first time, researchers looked at the percentage of a city's population that lives within a 10-minute walk of a park space. The most significant finding? The top-ranked cities have the easiest access to parks and paths for jogging, walking and biking.
