The office is generally where money is made, so it’s clearly important. Plus, if you're working an eight-hour workday, well, that's a third of your life, so make it count!
Believe it or not, the way you arrange your office furniture and what you choose for your decorations has a profound impact on your business and well-being.
Here are five feng shui concepts to boost your power mojo:
1. Make sure you have the right desk.
A rickety desk makes for rickety business. Same goes for something solid and sturdy. Think about how much work you do at your desk — it symbolizes the foundation of your business. Make sure it's practical, with the proper amount of drawers and storage.
2. Re-evaluate your desk position.
Think about the movies where the character is going to visit the big power-player CEO type. How is the desk positioned? Always, always, always, the power-player has a view of the door. Never is the person’s back to the people that are entering the office. This is called the “command position.”
The idea is that we're still cavepeople deep inside our brains, and we want to know what’s coming at us. It gives us “command” of our situation. So if your office allows for a view of the entrance, situate it that way, or “cure” it with a mirror placed where you can at least get a view of it.
3. Develop an organizational concept.
I don’t believe in everything being 100% neat and tidy all the time. Creative types don’t always work that way, and need a bit of disorder to get the juices flowing. However, there's no excuse for huge piles of paperwork, files that are way outdated, and random items that don’t seem to have a home. I don’t care how creative you are, those things are just going to drain your energy after a while.
Prioritize; assess the items in your office. If they're high priority, they should be within reach of your chair. If they're a lower priority, they can be stored in a much more out-of-the-way place. In other words, have the things you're using currently in your current space, and the other things properly put away. You'll see your mental facilities lighten and clear up, making you much more productive
4. Consider your light.
Oh my, those flourescents. Natural light is essential. If you can use LED in your office in any way possible, especially those that mimic natural light, do it. Those fluorescent lights flicker exhaust you. Make sure you step outside frequently throughout the day.
5. Add artwork and personal items.
Everyone needs these. Adding a personal touch to your office is a must if you want to feel like what you're working on has purpose! Make sure the images are uplifting, and bonus points for images that support your career path in some way, however symbolic it may be.
Remember, everything is energy, including the objects in your space. They have the power to affect you positively or negatively. Symbolic power symbols and furniture arrangement can make all the difference in your career. Choose wisely!
