Dove's "One Beautiful Thought" Campaign Aims To Boost Self-Esteem

Dove is at it again.

The personal care brand has been on a total body positivity mission for the past ten years — or, before it was a thing — in their "Campaign for Real Beauty."

Now, they have to step up their game since so many other brands are trying to tap into the body love market.

So this time, Dove France asks that we share #OneBeautifulThought — as in, one positive feeling about our appearances, instead of the usual negativity we inflict upon ourselves.

The script for this ad was made by asking women on the street to record their most personal thoughts about their looks. Then, an actress used the most negative of these thoughts — for example, "with your little baby teeth ... you look like a mouse" or "sit up straight otherwise your belly looks big" — to berate another actress in a cafe, within earshot of the same (supposedly unsuspecting) participants. This way, the women could hear their private thoughts voiced out loud in public — and, as you can tell by their expressions, they were appalled.

When the women couldn't take it anymore, they interrupted the actresses, pointing out that what they were saying was “harsh” and "violent." And while it all seems somewhat staged, the message is still clear: "If it's not acceptable to say to someone else, why say it to ourselves?"

Despite the fact that it's ad, the video certainly brings to light an issue we can all relate to. We are too often our own harshest critics — and we really need to kick this habit.
