Mornings are such an important and integral part of our day. How we experience our first few waking hours can completely set the tone for the rest of the day. Yet so many of us fight endless battles with the snooze button and dread getting out of bed. But it doesn't have to be this way.
It's possible to transform the start of your day. With just a few simple changes, mornings will soon be your favorite time of day.
Here are seven simple ways to start loving your mornings.
1. Start the morning with a cup herbal tea.
My current favorite is ginger and lemon tea with a dash of apple cider vinegar and honey.
2. Dedicate at least 10 minutes to yourself.
Devote just 10 or 15 minutes to "you time," so you're not just rushing out the door each morning. If you've got kids, wake up 10 minutes before they do to squeeze this time in. In your "you time," do whatever makes you feel good. That may be journaling, meditating, reading a spiritual or inspiring book, or simply taking the time to sit, sip and enjoy your cup of tea.
3. Create a self-love practice.
You might like to greet your reflection with a cheesy grin and a whispered, "I love you." You could dry body brush and apply a beautifully scented moisturizer after your shower. Or maybe a few rounds of sun salutations will get your self-love muscles pumping.
4. Take a peek outside.
Open the curtains and look outside. Take it all in and appreciate the world around you. Watch the sun rise, if you can. Or, for an even better kick-start to the day, get outside and breathe in the fresh air.
5. Don't look at your phone for the first hour of the day.
This is such a sacred part of your day and should be free of the negative feelings that can be stirred up by social media. If the temptation to open Facebook or your emails is too strong, put your phone onto airplane mode before you go to bed.
6. Keep it quiet.
Personally I find too much noise or loud music jarring when I first get up. I also love how quiet it can be in the mornings, before everyone has started rushing through their days, so be sure to enjoy this peaceful time.
7. Go to bed early enough for deep sleep.
In order to start waking up earlier you will need to go to bed earlier than you usually would. Otherwise the battle with your snooze button will continue to wage.
Whatever you do, do it with awareness and presence. Simply bringing awareness to your mornings has the power to completely revolutionize the way you feel when you first get out of bed.
