A Yogi's 5-Step Guide To Eating For Optimal Health

When I wrote about how I eat for optimal health earlier this year, I got quite a few people talking.

There was debate over about how little I eat and that many didn't feel I was getting enough protein or fat in my diet. I don't eat or live with the same habits most people may have, so my diet might reflect different nutritional needs.

Each one of us is an individual with personal day-to-day needs, so there's really no reason to follow someone else's diet.

But just how and what time to eat, is something everyone could benefit from. Most people are focused solely on what to eat — but there are many other essential habits to live by, affecting our health to a greater degree.

The key is to let the rhythms of nature serve as our guide.

You should eat according to the following guidelines, and see how quickly your digestive issues are resolved. You won't get bloated, get gas or put on weight any longer, I assure you.

1. Be aware of quantities.

The quantity of food you eat needs to be equal to the amount of nutrition and energy you need — nothing else. If you eat more for pleasure than nutrition, then you run the risk of becoming overweight or developing many other health issues.

2. Be aware of complicated mixtures.

The body craves simplicity while the mind attracts complications. Listen to your body (especially your stomach) when it comes to food or drink. Your mind may want all kinds of crazy combinations of foods all at the same time, but your digestion will be screaming out for simple foods, which are not hard to digest.

3. Timing of eating is everything.

When we eat exactly when our body needs food and not when it is "meal time" or when our mind has a craving, then we will be using the food we eat for energy.

It's really only when we try to eat because it is say, breakfast or dinner, that we are robotically consuming food according to social habits, instead of intuition. This is misusing food and the beginning of complicated health issues.

4. Don't eat and drink at the same time.

One of the most common reasons why our food won't digest and people suffer from indigestion, acidity or constipation, is because we dilute the acid of our stomach by consuming too many fluids.

This means our stomach no longer has the strength to properly break down food, even if it is organic and in the right quantity. In general as a rule, if we separate drinking and eating then we have a better chance of digesting everything we eat.

5. Don't mix cooked and raw food together.

Most people can digest cooked food with little problems, but trying to simultaneously digest raw food creates weak digestive fire.

Mixing raw and cooked foods is not good food combining! Also, raw food takes much more energy and digestive strength, because the body has to break up the enzymes. Whereas with cooked foods, the enzymes have been broken down through the heating process. If you have weak or problematic digestive issues, it is better to stick to cook foods.
