Today, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are donating $25 million to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control Foundation to help fight the Ebola epidemic that has killed over 4,000 people.
In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg wrote:
We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn't spread further and become a long term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio.
We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome.
According to the CDC Foundation's website, the donation would be used to "provide much-needed supplies and equipment for use on the ground in West Africa," like protection equipment, thermal scanners at airports to detect temperature, and ready-to-eat meals.
Here's hoping the money will help the frontline responders save lives and contain the outbreak.
