A DIY Yoga Mat Wash With Aromatic Essential Oils

When I first opened my yoga studio, I realized I needed to invest in a good mat wash. I was disappointed to find that many of the cleaners on the market were expensive and contained harsh toxic chemicals.

This prompted me to create a chemical-free version using witch hazel and tea tree oil as natural anti-microbial agents, and essential oils for scent. The end result was an inexpensive, yummy-smelling mat wash that really works.

I opted to use peppermint and lavender essential oils, which are known for promoting mental clarity and reducing stress. However, you can experiment with different scents based on your preferences and mood. The scent doesn't typically linger on your mat, but is a nice, aromatic pick-me-up at the end of a workout.

DIY Yoga Mat Wash

Fills one 8oz spray bottle

  • 3/4 cup distilled water
  • 1/4 cup alcohol free witch hazel
  • 1/4 teaspoon tea tree oil
  • 2-4 drops lavender oil
  • 2-4 drops peppermint oil

Combine all ingredients and pour into spray bottle. Shake up your mixture before each use. A batch this size should last you 2-3 months, depending on how often and thoroughly you clean your mat.
