Stress is the ultra-toxin. We use the word “stress” to describe every painful, frustrating, irritating, crazy-making, sickening and otherwise ugly energy.
Stress builds upon itself like a vicious cycle. Working long hours where you aren’t happy is stressful. Not sleeping because you are stressed becomes more stressful. Skipping breakfast because you overslept adds more stress ... and so on and so forth.
If you have no refuge from stress, no calm space to go where you can unwind, the stress cycle becomes really hard to break. We all need a place to meditate, nap, read a book, sleep well and eat a quiet dinner without drama, yet these simple things can get pulled into the stress vortex, too.
If you can take some of the stress out of your home, you will take stress out of your whole life.
In the philosophy of feng shui, your home is a mirror of you. A stressed home is full of noise, lacking comfort, overly cluttered or just completely drained of the sparkle you feel when you walk into your favorite restaurant or a gorgeous garden. That dazzle of life force, that “feeling in the air” of goodness gets sucked from your environment when you get overly-stressed.
The good news: if you unwind the stress in your home, you might be amazed at how your life can calm down, too!
Here are some simple ways to de-stress your home and perk up the shining good vibes that we all crave:
1. Deep clean your home.
Dust, vacuum and scrub like crazy. When you have clean surfaces, you amplify the metal element energy of your home. This helps you to create distance from stress while it clears your air and your mind!
2. Put a tabletop fountain where you want to feel more flow.
Even just a small amount of running water anywhere but the bathroom or bedroom will create calm and build momentum.
3. Add lavender, rose or sandalwood essential oil to your home.
Either with candles, diffused oils or literally just a few drops on your pillow or your wrist. All of these oils are grounding and relaxing … plus, they're quite earthy and luscious.
4. Use curtains to create more quiet space.
Curtains are softer and more fluid, and often thicker and more substantial than most blinds or shades. When we see soft textures, we feel “softer.” This translates into less tension, rigidity and stress.
5. Clean out your pantry and refrigerator and stock it with (healthy!) food you love.
I know this sounds basic, but the most stressful home I’d ever experienced also had an empty refrigerator, and a pantry filled with expired foods. There’s nothing quite like feeling run down and having nothing to eat at the same time! Lots of high-stress homes I enter have limited or no food at home at all. After all, you're too stressed and crazed to shop … or always working and never home!
To reverse that cycle start keeping simple things (a favorite tea or coffee, a few pantry items) and take a little time at home to enjoy them.
6. Add earth tones to your space.
Earth is grounding and calming to both mind and body. If you have trouble sleeping or feel yourself getting overly-wound-up, more neutrals and less stark white and ultra bright colors will instantly Zen-out your décor. Some earthy pottery, brick or stone will bring in even more awesome earth element.
7. Bring in messages of peace and happiness.
Frame a lovely poem in your kitchen to read while you cook, add a few books that make your feel loved and calm to your nightstands, get a new welcome mat for your front door that says “Welcome!” Pin up photos from a big celebration. These little messages, symbols and images have a big effect on your experience of home.
I always suggest trying the things that strike you as most novel, really fun or very necessary. Remember: If you don’t enjoy what you are doing, even things that are supposed to be “good for you” can be stressful.
Even just a simple step or two toward more peace at home can interrupt your stress cycle and move you into the calm you crave. Considering the fact that less stress can revolutionize your whole life, even a small shift toward more peace can make a huge difference!
