A California couple who were married for 62 years passed away just fours hours apart last month, holding hands.
Maxine and Don Simpson, of Bakersfield, California, died peacefully in their family's home, as they lay beside one another, their grandchildren say.
After a happy life together during their 62 years of marriage, and after raising two adopted sons, both Maxine and Don were rapidly declining in health.
Don, a civil engineer, broke his hip two weeks ago, while Maxine had begun to succumb to her battle with cancer months earlier. Realizing the two should not be separated during this time, family moved the couple into a spare room and arranged their beds so that they could hold hands.
With their hands intertwined, last month Maxine peacefully passed away. About four hours later, just after Maxine’s body was taken from the room, Don passed away, too.
The family is calling the event the end of a “true love story.” We can't help but agree.
