Can Sitting Too Much Give You Cancer?

We all know that sitting for hours at a time each day, whether in front of a computer or in front of the T.V., can feel awful and can actually be harmful to your health.

Well, the latest study on this topic found that too much sitting could actually put you at increased risk for certain types of cancer.

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published new research last week showing that increased sedentary behavior is linked with a greater risk of developing colon cancer, endometrial cancer and lung cancer.

The research, which was a review of 43 prior studies, analyzed over four million study participants and nearly 70,000 cases of cancer. The review found that just an additional two hours of sitting per day increased risk of colon cancer by 8%, increased risk of endometrial cancer by 10% and increased risk of lung cancer by 6%.

Because the study is a review of prior studies, it doesn’t prove that sitting itself necessarily causes these cancers. It may be that sedentary behavior is linked to other unhealthy behaviors that are cancer-causing.

But until we know more, consider installing a standing desk in front of your office or home workstations, take plenty of walking or standing breaks throughout the day and try these tips to break up any extended hours of sitting!
