I will never forget the day when my husband sat me down for my intervention. He chose his words very carefully. He looked me in the eyes and said, “Honey, I think it’s time you stop wearing sweatpants everyday.”

What went through my head was: Does he even know me?! I am the QUEEN of sweatpants! I cannot live without them, especially since I work from home. Besides, they make me feel great.

But then I started to think about it … is “great” really how sweatpants make me feel?

I wore my old, worn out, college sweatpants to my job because they made me feel comfortable. But "being comfortable" isn't really compatible with changing. Change is difficult. Growing any area of your life — whether it’s eating a healthier diet, adjusting to motherhood, or forging a new relationship — requires change.

In order for me to see any growth in my lifestyle, mainly my career, I had to be willing to step out of my comfort zone, out of my comfortable sweats, and into the life I envisioned living.

My husband tried to smooth this gut-wrenching statement with a very useful nugget. It’s so useful, in fact, that I’ve decided to share it here:

"You have to look like the life you want."

Sweatpants do not look like I make seven-figures and empower women around the world. They do not read “confidence” and “beauty,” which are two qualities I try to help women develop.

The moment I began to wear more jeans, blouses, makeup, and scarves (which I LOVE), I noticed instant change.

Don’t get me wrong here: I DID NOT go out and buy myself a new wardrobe! What I did was dress as the person I'd had in mind when I bought all the other clothes in my closet.

Suddenly, my attitude, my smile, the way I thought (like a boss!), and the way I felt (like I can do this!) improved. I now feel confident and powerful enough to make change happen.

Whether you're trying to change or are considering taking a leap, always remember this: The first step toward the life you want is to look like the life you want.

What about you? Have you gone through any major transformations lately? What steps did you take to upgrade your new look? Let me know in the comments below. And if you know someone who could use a “sweatpants intervention,” please share this blog with them … it might be just what they need to step out of their comfort zone, and into their next big change!
