You're busy, right? Always busy. Emails pile up, laundry piles up, and your to-do list never gets any shorter. It's true for all of us, and the last thing anyone needs is another worry — especially when it comes to something as vital as our health.
Between work, family, and trying to have a social life, taking care of your nutrition can often feel more like a burden than an amazing journey that you can experience with your body. I run an organic meal delivery business in New York City, and my days are filled with meetings, phone calls, never-ending emails, and putting out fires (usually metaphorical, but there’s been a physical one too…).
Whether you run a business or a busy family, your brain is often working hard to help other people and isn't focused on yourself. So when it comes to eating healthy and making healthy choices, it’s important to make it as easy, efficient, and light on the mind as humanly possible!
Over the years I've learned a few lifesaving tricks that have helped ensure that I get my daily nutrients without having it take up any of my precious brainpower. Those tricks have developed into habits, and now staying healthy — even on the busiest of days — has become second nature and not another task on my to-do list.
Here are some of the healthy habits I’ve instituted in my daily routine to make sure that my body and mind are taken care of, and you can use them to do the same!
1. Optimize your mealtime.
Every time you eat is an opportunity to put nutrients into your body. Make a habit of adding a little extra something-something to each meal. Keep a stash of superfoods like ground flax, chia and hemp seeds on hand. These guys really help add an extra dose of nutrients, with a minimal (if any) effect on flavor. They’re great on everything from yogurt to soup to chocolate cake! Experiment with new superfoods and new combinations!
2. Optimize your morning, too.
In a related post, I explain that even my morning coffee gets a little extra love by adding in a scoop of coconut oil for a dose of some good, healthy fats (which are so important for a healthy body!). My new favorite trick is to add Healthforce’s Earth powder to my coffee, or into a glass of almond milk with maple syrup for a tasty decaf treat!
3. Select the veggie option.
If you’re having decision fatigue (that thing that happens right before lunch after a hectic morning or after a long day at work), opt for the veggie option for your meal. Steer clear from the easy-to-eat bread, meat, and cheese options, and you’ll be one step closer to making a healthy decision without having to give it a second look.
4. Eat your water.
Just today I looked at the clock and realized it was 4 pm and I hadn’t had one glass of water the whole day! Luckily, I'd eaten a hydrating breakfast of fresh fruit and organic yogurt and had a monster salad with tons of water-rich greens like fresh arugula and baby kale, topped with chopped veggies like cucumber, bell peppers, and carrots. If you’re eating fresh fruits and veggies in every meal, you won’t have to stress as much over getting your eight glasses every day; you’ll be hydrated, and most likely glowing!
5. Make happy hour even happier.
If you’re going to go for the after work cocktail, opt for cocktails with fresh juices, sparkling water and lime, or try making your own concoction with an herbal tea as a mixer. It goes great with darker alcohols like whiskey and rum! In our MindBodyGreen video course, we share one of our favorite cocktails that’s infused with cleansing spices and chia seeds!
Take a moment before your meal to stop, breathe, and recognize the nourishment you are about to put into your body, and the love it's going to send to every molecule of your being. That meal is there to help you and support you and give you fuel so that you can keep rockin’ it like the superstar that you are! Eating in a relaxed, present, loving state of mind will help your body assimilate the nutrients more efficiently.
These are just a few of the ways to add a little nutrients to your day. I’d love to hear about some of the healthy habits you’ve created in your life in order to make taking care of your nutrition a no-brainer. Leave me a comment below!
