Tom Colicchio Asks Congress To Scrap Anti-GMO Labeling Bill

Last week, we brought you the story of an a proposed bill that would allow food manufacturers to hide genetically modified ingredients on food labels. The response against the bill, sponsored by Kansas representative Mike Pompeo, has been swift and strong, and on Thursday celebrity chef Tom Colicchio added his name to a growing list of opponents.

A Food Policy Action news release quoted Colicchio — a founding board member of the organization — as saying:

“The overwhelming majority of Americans want GMO foods to be labeled. As a chef, I want to know what I’m serving my customers, and as a father, I should be able to make an informed decision about what I’m feeding my kids. More than ever, consumers want to know what is in their food, but this dangerous and dishonest bill takes us in the wrong direction.”

Colicchio, best known for his role on the reality cooking show Top Chef, also sent a letter to members of Congress last week alerting them that support for the DARK Act would likely be scored negatively in the 2014 National Food Policy Scorecard, according to the release.

A petition to stop the bill has already garnered more than 140,000 signatures, and it's important that prominent figures like Colicchio get involved in the fight for the right to know what consumers, well, consume. As always, stay vigilant and let your congressperson know what you think!

More information on the petition can be found here.
