10 Fast Fixes When You're Having A Bad Day
The holidays are a wonderful time for generosity and joy, but the season can also bring about days that are incredibly taxing and stressful. We’ve all been there, and sometimes it can feel like a day was doomed from the moment you woke up in the morning.
But wait! The day can be saved!
These quick solutions will help you banish your bad day once and for all — so you can get back to what you love most about the holidays. Here are 10 fast fixes for a bad day:
1. Step outside.
The fastest fix for a bad day is simply stepping outside and removing yourself from whatever is causing tension. Get a breath of fresh air, soak in the sun and do a few leisurely stretches.
Get up and go for a run, or just tackle a few jumping jacks in your living room. Exercise stimulates brain chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, which can help make us feel happier and more relaxed.
3. Read a chapter from your favorite book.
If you’re feeling in a funk, take a few minutes to mentally “check out” and read something that you enjoy. Immersing yourself in something you like to learn about will help shift your focus away from negative thoughts.
4. Turn on some music.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a soothing playlist to calm your nerves or a nostalgic collection of your favorite songs; music can make us happier, more empathetic and more alert.
5. Call a friend.
Even if it’s just for a few minutes, talking to a friend or family member that “gets you” can brighten your whole day! Hearing the voice of someone who cares about your well-being will do wonders for your mood.
6. Take a long bath.
Devote some dedicated “me” time by taking a long shower or bath. This will also keep technology at bay so you can clear your head.
Participating in the act of meditation has been shown to improve your physiological state. If you’re able to, sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Try to relax your muscles. Take in a few deep breaths and let your thoughts form at their own pace. Don’t try to block them out.
8. Watch something that makes you laugh.
Find a movie, TV show, comedy skit or a personal video that will make you smile. The physical act of laughing almost instantly relieves stress.
9. Write it out.
Got a few things on your mind? Write out your frustrations with a pen and paper or your computer. The act of writing our thoughts down can help us discover the root of negative emotions. You might be surprised what you find!
10. Change your perspective.
Feelings of frustration or anger often come from the mindset that every action we are taking at this moment is very important. Take a minute to think about what you're truly grateful for — your family, your home, your career — whatever comes to mind. Those frustrations won’t seem so important anymore.
