With a potentially stressful holiday season approaching, NOW is the time to kick it up a notch in the self-care department, so you're firing on all cylinders and feeling your best. Get your mind, body and spirit revitalized with these seven tips, and be ready to tell holiday stress goodbye.
1. Start a detox program.
What? Isn’t that a spring thing? Actually, a seasonal detox is ideal. Fall is an especially good time to detox to get the body in prime working order. It's also the season to honor the lungs and large intestine, organs that breathe new life into us, flush out toxins, and support our emotional health. Many of us suffer from seasonal affective disorder, experiencing lower mood levels in the darker months. A cleanse can help lift our energy, and prepare us for the shorter days ahead. It can also help kick a sugar habit, especially right after Halloween.
2. Organize your closets.
Again, isn’t this a spring cleaning thing? I’m guessing your closet has become unorganized since your last closet clean-out in the spring. Put up the strappy shoes, sundresses, and tank tops, and pull out the comfy sweaters, longer skirts, scarves, and soft boots. If it sounds overwhelming, hire an organizational consultant. They can be worth their weight in gold, saving you time in finding things later!
3. Make soups, stews and chili.
These are great for football games, cool evenings, and dinner parties. Use seasonal ingredients such as squash, potatoes, onions, and root vegetables to support your body in transitioning from summer to winter. Soups and stews are easy to prepare and digest. Using your crockpot saves even more time. And there are usually leftovers, so you can cook once and eat twice!
4. Get outside.
Soon it will be getting too cold for many activities, so now is your chance to embrace some outdoor activity without the oppressing heat of summer. A run, walk, hike or bike ride in the sun can feel oh-so-good this time of year. Whatever you enjoy, I encourage you to get outside and do it!
5. Sign up for a cooking class.
Bored with your old recipes? Going gluten free and don’t know what to eat? Sign up for a cooking class this fall, and get some new dishes to get excited about.
6. Change up your breakfast.
Eat the same old thing every day, or don’t eat at all? Breakfast sets you up for your energy for the day, and if done right, it stabilizes your blood sugar. So get up a few minutes earlier and try something different. With the cooler mornings, a hot breakfast for you and the kids might be just the thing to shift your energy and start the day off right.
7. Meditate daily.
If you are already meditating regularly, kudos! You already know the amazing benefits. If you're just dabbling, or have never meditated, now is the time to try. Meditation has incredible benefits for our mood, energy, focus, concentration, stress level, decision-making ability, and so much more. We are all so busy, and some wear it as a badge of honor. Take time to slow down, get grounded, and get in touch with yourself. You’ll be surprised and amazed at what comes out of getting quiet for a short time each day.
