How I Supported My IBS With Essential Oils
When I was 20 years old, I was diagnosed with IBS, also known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
I had a stomachache every day. I was bloated, gassy, constipated, and in pain every single day for 20 years.
Our systems are supposed to be constantly expelling waste and toxins. When this doesn't go as planned, your life can be living nightmare. You want to feel normal and simply have your body function properly. I did, but my body wasn't complying. And when it wasn't, it left me feeling like crap and depressed.
During one of my bouts of illness, I was sent home with five different medications. Meds for pain. Meds to stop the spasms. Meds to stop the nausea. Meds for acid reflux. Meds to help me sleep. Are you kidding me? Did they really think I was going to put all of those manufactured, synthetic drugs which would probably cause me more harmful side effects and eventually long-term kidney and liver damage?
Our bodies aren't designed to take loads synthetic crap without paying for it later.
It's like choosing between the lesser of two evils. I could manage the pain in that moment, or I could potentially suffer long-term consequences. Once again, I'd be at the mercy of Western medicine.
I made a choice. I chose to get back to basics and completely transform the way I ate and how I managed my day-to-day life.
Although I had a pretty clean diet already (no red meat, dairy-free, gluten-free), I used to be a sugar junkie. It was time to cut that addiction out. Knowing that plant-based was best, I went 90% raw and vegan.
But I still needed more.
I bet you don't know this, but pharmaceutical companies create medication that mimics the natural defenses and medicinal properties of plants. My quest to become more holistic in my approach to healing led me to essential oils.
I started using a blend that has peppermint, tarragon, fennel, caraway, coriander and anise for my stomach aches. All of these oils, especially in this combination, help with bloating, colic, constipation, diarrhea, digestion, food poisoning, gas, heartburn, nausea, inflammation and more.
I also used frankincense to help with inflammation. Frankincense is one of the oldest oils around, and it's the go-to oil for emotional, immune and nervous support. Tension? Moodiness? Anxiety? This is your oil. Some studies show it may even fight cancer.
I also used blends to help with my sleep. A more restful night's sleep breeds calmness and serenity the next day. My blend includes lavender, Roman chamomile, ylang ylang, sweet marjoram and vanilla bean extract, plus vetiver oil on the soles of my feet before bed.
Essential oils are powerful medicine. Bye-bye, IBS.
