Halloween is right around the corner and although we strive to be more mindful in all areas of lives, the holidays can be particularly challenging when it comes to eating in a way that promotes wellness.

If you need some support, I suggest you look to Ayurveda’s most basic principle:

Like increases like, while opposites balance.

In a nutshell, Ayurveda explains that we want to counterbalance the qualities we see in Nature with opposing qualities in our diets, activities and lifestyle choices.

Simply put, the logic is that too much of a good thing….is not a good thing.

For example, having a glass of iced tea when it’s snowing outside will make us shiver. Our bodies then have to work hard to get us feeling comfortable again. Lots of energy is wasted in this pendulum-like process.

Now, back to the present. We're moving into the heart of the Fall season in the U.S. Ayurveda tells us that Fall carries with it dry, rough, light, cold, subtle and mobile qualities.

So, using this basic Ayurvedic principle of like increases like while opposites balance, we can tell that eating foods that ground, moisten, nurture and warm the body are going to be the best choices.

Sweet, sour and salty tasting foods are the ideal candidates for the job.

Here are some examples of foods to include in your Fall meals:

  • Fresh sweet fruits, like mango, coconut, berries and peaches
  • Fresh sour fruits, like cherries, plums, green grapes, lemon and limes
  • Sweet veggies like corn and peas

I’ve put together a few Ayurvedic recipes that are exceptional for sharing and will have everyone feeling alive and vibrant this Halloween. I’ve only included one in this post to keep it from getting too long, but if you’d like even more, I’ve put together a free booklet with several more for you to download.

So go ahead, celebrate AND be authentic with what you’re putting into your body!

Rest In Peas Raw Chocolate Bites

Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen peas
  • 1/2 cup cacao powder
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup cacao butter
  • 2 tbsp coconut nectar
  • 1 tbsp raw almond butter (substitute any other nut butter you like)
  • 1 vanilla bean (substitute 1 tsp liquid vanilla extract)
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 12 mini cupcake liners
  • 1/2 cup dehydrated raspberries (optional)

Preparation

  • Melt the cacao butter and coconut oil together in a double boiler.
  • Add almond butter to the warm mixture and stir until it’s dissolved.
  • Pour in cacao powder, agave, vanilla and salt. Mix together.
  • Taste test and see if you want to add anything.
  • Pour the chocolate mix into the mini cupcake liners.
  • Place in the freezer for 1-2 minutes.
  • Pull it out and stick in any Halloween decorations you want, such as the toothpicks shown in the photo.
  • Place back in the freezer for 30 minutes.
  • Organize the chocolates on a platter with the peas. Make sure these get eaten up quick because the chocolate will melt if left out for too long.
