Though running to a doctor or pharmacy may seem like the easy thing to do every time your skin flares up, it's often the natural, homemade alternatives that best treat acne for the long-term. Medications like antibiotics and analgesics may help lessen symptoms immediately, but their side effects are many and overuse can cause serious problems down the road.

For a greener way to treat problem skin, why not try one of these DIY facial treatments? Your skin will thank you.

Facial Steaming

This is an easy, noninvasive home treatment you can try to help loosen the oil and dirt clogging your pores and leading to acne. Not only is steam a great immediate cleanser, continued practice can help prevent skin problems down the road.

You'll need:

  • 1 pot of boiling water
  • 1 towel
  • A large bowl
  • Optional: a handful of organic basil, mint of lavender

Preparation:

Carefully pour the boiling water into a heat-safe bowl and add the herbs. Let the water cool a bit while you wash any residue or makeup off your face so your skin is clean. Then carefully hover your face about six inches above the surface of the water and drape the towel over your head and bowl so it catches the steam.

Steam your pores for 5-10 minutes (or as long as you're comfortable), and make sure to breathe deeply. The herbs you've added to the how water are a great source of aromatherapy. When you're done, pat your face dry (be careful not to rub! The towel fibers can cause abrasions to your softened skin). For an added bonus, try using one of the following two masks right after facial steaming so your pores get even more of the goodness these treatments have to offer.

Honey & Lemon Toner

This quick toner mask is great for deep-cleaning your pores. Both honey and lemons are antibiotic, so the powerful combination will help treat any blemishes you may have and also prevent future breakouts.

You'll need:

  • Half a lemon
  • 2 Tbsp. honey
  • small bowl

Preparation:

Squeeze the lemon juice in to the bowl and add the honey, stirring to combine. With clean hands, carefully apply the mixture to your face, making sure to gently massage it in as you go. Let the toner sit on your face for five minutes, then gently wash it off with warm water and a cloth.

Honey, Yogurt & Cinnamon Mask

Both honey and cinnamon have antibiotic properties, while the yogurt reduces redness and irritation.

You'll need:

  • 2 Tbsp. honey
  • 1/4 cup plain, unsweetened yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • small bowl

Preparation:

Mix the honey, yogurt and cinnamon until they combine into a thin paste. Apply the mask to a clean face and keep it on for 5-10 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat dry.
