Our skin is actually the largest organ and needs nourishing attention. With a little extra lovin', our skin will glow from the inside out, so edible, living skincare must be accompanied by a wildly natural and luscious diet with cleansing, whole, living ingredients. If we can eat our beauty regime and we're using organic foods to make our products, the ingredients are likely safe for our skin.
My career as a "natural dermatologist" began as I mixed living, whole ingredients together to make the following three skin treatments. I opened the cupboards, harvested some fruit and herbs, and took out the blender.
The Moisturizing Mask
This stuff works miracles — my skin looks brighter and feels fab. Both basil and grapefruit seed extract are antibiotic and work to prevent and heal breakouts. Orange peel is an amazing brightener and the benefits of Vitamin C are extraordinary. Skin also gobbles up the moisturizing fat and nutrients in coconut milk, leaving it smooth.
Ingredients
- 3 tbs coconut milk
- 1 orange (juice and peel)
- 1/2 cup basil
- a few drops of grapefruit seed extract
Preparation
Thoroughly blend all ingredients in a blender and apply to face. Let it soak in for 30 minutes before gently washing. You can store any leftovers in the fridge (the cold thickens the mask and the cool ingredients feel revitalizing on warm skin).
The Brightener
I've been using lemon juice to brighten my skin and reverse the effects of adult acne and sun exposure. It's so simple to do, all you need is one lemon!
Ingredients
- 1 lemon
Preparation
Simply slice a lemon into quarters of eighths and gently rub the juice on your face before applying a moisturizing mask.
The Toner
I've been using this apple cider vinegar toner for years to reduce the size of my pores and balance the pH level of my skin. Despite it's smell, ACV toner works immediately — your skin's natural, even tone and vitality will be restored.
Ingredients
- 2 tbs apple cider vinegar
- 4 tbs water
Preparation
Combine the apple cider vinegar and water. Using a clean washcloth or cotton ball, apply liberally to your face and neck, avoiding sensitive areas around the eyes. For an added bonus, drink 1-2 tbs of ACV with water every day to cleanse your internal tract and keep illness away.
Sometimes, au natural home remedies are the way to go when it comes to skincare. As we feed our skin with natural products, we care for our planet and nourish our wild souls ... and we look good doing it.
