What’s your deepest ambition? Think about how you’d answer that question if no one would laugh, no one would judge you. That is the thing you should be pursuing. And you can. You have the power to accomplish anything. You just have to stop getting in your own way. These techniques will help you see what’s possible, outline objectives to reach your goals, and provide strategies to smooth the rough patches.

Yes, you can create the life you want. Here’s how.

1. See the big picture, but take baby steps.

When you set smaller, more attainable goals for yourself you are more likely to stick with whatever you are trying to achieve because you can consistently see progress. The success acts as an encouragement, and a motivator, which keeps you going.

For example, if you don’t feel at all motivated to work out, you can commit to ten minutes of exercise. Anyone can do ten minutes of exercise. But, by the time that’s done, you often feel good enough that you want to keep going. Even if you don’t, you can tell yourself you did what you committed to. You can feel good about that.

2. Connect with the outliers in your field.

Most people aren’t built for swimming like Michael Phelps, don’t have photographic memories like Stephen Hawking. That doesn’t mean you can’t be successful. It just means you won’t accomplish something the way they did. It might not come as easily. Look for the people who aren’t savants, who put in the work and strategized to get where they wanted to be. The people who had everything against them but still got what they wanted are the most inspirational.

3. Seek advice from the most passionate people.

In addition to learning from the underdogs, it’s incredibly motivating to talk to people who just can’t live without whatever it is they are passionate about. These people will be more accessible than those at the very pinnacle of their field, and their advice will be more helpful because they are clearly deeply invested in what they do.

4. Defy the status quo.

What everyone else has done and is doing is a frame of reference. But that doesn’t mean you need to do things that way. You have to find what works for your individual strengths, weaknesses, needs, and goals. People that follow the herd aren’t the ones who stand out. Think about Alan Turing, Steve Jobs, It’s the people who are innovative and creative in their thinking that leave a lasting impact.

5. Don’t get discouraged by small setbacks.

Obstacles along the journey are inconsequential as long as you’re moving in the direction of your goals. Consistently making positive efforts to accomplish what you’ve set out to do is all that matters.

You won’t achieve your dreams overnight. However, by starting to make decisions that feed that long-term vision for your future, you’ll see them come to fruition over time.
