Baseball and fresh produce are two hallmarks of a summer well spent. Now, thanks to AT&T Park, home to the San Francisco Giants, you can enjoy both in one evening at their huge, new edible ballpark garden.
That's right ... hot dogs, no more! Now, beneath the center field scoreboard, you'll spot growing artichokes, lavender, violets, watercress, kale, lemon grass, blueberries, avocados and more. In addition to fresh-picked greens, the 4,320 square-foot garden space houses dining tables, benches, a bar and fire pits for fan use. It's also selling salads packaged in Mason jars, which you can enjoy in the garden itself or take back to your seat.
According to Modern Farmer, this delicious local produce will be served to home team players in smoothies and kale salads. Fans will find the produce in the ballpark's restaurants, managed by AT&T Park's food service partner, Bon Appétit.
The garden in San Francisco isn't the first edible garden at a baseball park. It comes after the San Diego Padres planted an edible garden behind the home team bullpen back in 2012, and began using the vegetables in meals. But this long-awaited garden has caught a lot of attention, so much so that it received a mention by President Barack Obama in 2013 when he congratulated the team on winning the 2012 World Series.
The veggies of AT&T Park will benefit more than just players and fans. The garden will double as an outdoor classroom for kids of the Bay Area, helping to educate the next generation about urban farming, healthy foods and sustainability.
