Conquering Cancer with Carrot Juice
Just over two years ago I was working at my hectic dream job, partying three nights a week (and that was just the week nights) and living on a diet that consisted mostly of champagne, canapés and late night Lean Cuisines. Fast-forward those two years and here I am, a vegan freelance writer spending my days drinking carrot juice, meditating, practicing yoga and doing coffee enemas. Yes, I said coffee enemas. What brought on the extreme lifestyle change, you say? No, I didn’t just burn out or suddenly find God. I was diagnosed with cancer and received a massive wake-up call that it was time to take control of my own health and well-being.

On April 25 2008, when I was just 22 years old, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive, very rare form of cancer called Epithelioid Sarcoma, which is in my left hand and arm. After having a high dose of chemo pumped through my arm following scans showed I was clear of cancer. Little did I know it would come back, not even a year after going into remission. After being told by doctors that my only real chance of long-term survival would be to have my arm amputated at the shoulder I decided to take matters into my own hands. I refused their offers of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and began searching for natural, alternative cancer treatments. The way I saw it I had two choices. I could rely on the slash, poison and burn method offered to me by the medical profession and become stuck in the ‘cancer patient’ category for who knows how long, or I could take responsibility for my illness and bring my body to optimum health so that it can heal itself. For me it was an easy decision. Chemo and radiation do not have great success on the type of cancer I have, and there is no way I’m going to let them cut my arm off.

So that brings me to the Gerson Therapy – my weapon of choice against cancer. In April this year I spent three weeks at the Gerson clinic in Mexico to learn first-hand how the Therapy will heal my body. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the Gerson Therapy uses the body’s own healing mechanisms to beat cancer and other illnesses including diabetes, migraines, heart disease, arthritis, skin disorders, tuberculosis and many others. The basis of the Therapy is a diet, which includes eating only organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables and drinking 13 glasses of freshly squeezed juice per day in hourly intervals. The idea is to strengthen the immune system and load you up with heaps of minerals, enzymes, beta-carotene, Vitamins A and C, and other antioxidants that attack free radicals and ultimately, restore your body to optimum health. The diet is designed to starve your body of anything tumor-promoting and nourish it with tumor-fighting nutrients. According to the late Dr Max Gerson, (the medical genius who came up with all this) if you can stick to the strict regime for a minimum of two years, Gerson Therapy has the ability to cure cancer like no drug can.

I am about three months into the Therapy and so far I feel amazing. There are days when I feel so chained to the strict regime that I am a complete nightmare though. I get sad, depressed and angry and take my frustration out on whoever is around to cop it. But then I have a good scream and cry and before you know it I’m back to normal. I’m assured it’s all just part of the massive detox I’m undertaking. These tantrums are called "healing reactions" and they can come in many forms – nausea, diarrhea, inflammation, pain etc. The explanation is that you have to feel worse before you get better. Several people I was at the clinic with are living proof of this.

The therapy gets some seriously amazing results and I cannot wait until I can count myself as one of it’s success stories. I have absolutely no doubt that I will be. And despite these fleeting bouts of insanity, I can definitely say that cancer has been the best thing to happen to me. Seriously! This illness has made me open to a whole wonderful world of health and wellness that I never knew existed. Now if I could just get through a weekend without carrying on like a two-year-old …
